We painted our front room and added a colorful rug, but the rest of the main level is still lacking!
(See my early Valentine's Day present, my framed family picture...Love it Josh! Thanks!!)
We had a couch and a old table off of the kitchen, but decided to turn it into a formal dining area. We bought a new table (not oatmeal!!) But this is where I need help! Decorating has always been such a struggle for me!
This room NEEDS color and more furniture. I would like to add a hutch and maybe this in the kitchen area.
As you can tell, I am in desperate need of decorating help. I am open to all colors. HELP!!

Do you know who rocks at decorating? Shauna Ferguson! I told her she was going shopping with me when we move into our next house! You should ask her. :) Love the flooring. I am missing our laminate. This rental house is full of tan carpet!
i still really like your house. i've been pulling up clips of hgtv shows on hulu to get ideas on color and things. i'm still learning myself but i think you're doing great just keep going.
Everything you posted is absolutely lovely. gives me hope that someday our house will become a home :) thanks for sharing your home-makeover! again, i LOVE it! ALL! xoxo
(miss you)
I think it all looks adorable!!! You are doing a great job. As far as color advice goes...it will depend on first of all if the kitchen is viewable from your yellow room? If it is then make sure you get a color that will compliment the yellow, either monochramtically or a color that has a yellow undertone. If you are really blod then you could consider a rich plum on one wall as an accent and that is the direct compliment to yellow. If the room isn't viewable from the yellow room then you are fair game and you could do a really pretty green. If you are hesistant about color then choose to do just one wall first as an accent. Or if you are too nervous about color at all then try doing some sort of a patter or art arrangement out of vinyl letters or vinyl art first. Good luck! (sorry I know tons of advice, that is what you get when someone who majored in interior design reads you blog...;))
I don't have any wisdom to add to the other comments. I learned everything I know blogwalking and obsessively watching HGTV's Designed to Sell and Get it Sold. I just wanted to weigh in that I LOVE the island from Ikea. It definitely gets my vote. Good luck!
I love your yellow room. I've got some serious ideas for your dining and kitchen area. :-) I'll email you some pictures. I'm partial to blue. Have you considered white panelling on the bottom and a blue/grey on top? Or a chair rail with a print wallpaper (oh yes, wallpaper is back) on bottom and solid on top? You may also consider painting your kitchen cabinets white. I can help! We'll be there in just a couple weeks!
Love your rug and chandelier. And the paint color. As you saw from my house, I'm LOVING green lately so that would be my advice. I think it would go nicely with the yellow as well. I agree, HGTV will give you great ideas. Good luck! Can't wait to see what you do!
I am not the decorating kind, but I think your front room looks perfect! Love the color, and especially love that framed family picture ;) I am excited to see how that kitchen turns out! Cute house!!
Hilary I love the colors you picked for the living room. So pretty!
What if you added a white chair rail (they're super easy to put up; just buy some at Home Depot & use a nail gun) & painted the wall below it a deep red to carry that color through from the living room? That way you could keep the oatmeal if you wanted, or if you really hate it, go with an off-white or something. Anyway, it'd break up the wall & make the room more colorful.
I like the idea of chair railing or beadboard with paint/wallpaper on top. I have a nice picture of a dining room with paneling about 3/4 of the way up and brown or grayish blue paint on top. Lovely. Wallpaper can be kind of iffy because it can really date a home in just a matter of years and it's very subjective in terms of taste and a prospective buyer may hate that they have to remove it later. Whereas paint, you just slap on a few coats. You could attempt some faux finishing to give it texture and depth, but if you want to keep it simple, I would say paint a complimenting color to the rest of your scheme, add some furniture that you love and can use in multiple homes in multiple rooms (hutches and consoles)and add some window coverings. Your bare windows and tiny windows make that room look really plain because of all the same color with nothing big to break it up. A rug under the dining table might be nice, but I understand the difficulty in keeping it clean.
What I like to do is go to the fabric store and pick out a great fabric with lots of colors in it that you would maybe use for drapery or pillows and pull your colors from the fabric. Its so much easier to have something to pull from instead of pulling colors out of no where. I also agree with Megan on painting your cabinets white and I say get a darker counter top. Also some crown molding would look great. You can also frame the fabric to add color. Getting a great area rug is also another way to bring in color and to create 2 separate rooms. Oh I love the island as well!!
Hil - I love the wall color in your living room and the floors look great! You'll have to let me know how much you paid to get the floors re-done - we're looking into buying when we move to CA and I swear every house we look at online has awful flooring so I'm thinking we may have to re-do it.
Also I think you are a great decorator! I'm sure whatever you chose for the rest of your house will turn out perfect.
